چکیده
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis in permanent teeth and its association with dental caries in a group of school children living in a nonfluoridated community of Wielkopolska (Poland). The sample consisted of 470 children aged 6–14 years. Dental fluorosis was described using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov Index (TFI). Dental caries experience was assessed in accordance with the number of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT). The study revealed 80 subjects (17%) to have their dentition affected by fluorosis with the range of TFI scores 1–3. The association between the prevalence of fluorosis and dental caries was not statistically significant (p=0.69). The subjects unaffected by fluorosis had a mean DMFT of 2.51 which was not significantly higher than the mean of 2.45 among those with fluorosis (p=0.86). The results do not support the theory about caries preventive benefits associated with excessive fluoride (F) exposure.

The effects of conductivity and pH of saliva on electrochemical potentials of metallic dental materials
The paper presents results of the study on electrochemical potentials of metallic dental materials. Seven alloys, amalgam and chromium-nickel steel were examined as well as the effect of the solution conductivity ranging from 12.5 μS/cm to 2.01 mS/cm and solution pH within the range of 5.5 to 11.2 on electrochemical potentials of the materials. Amalgam presented with the lowest changes of the s...
متن کاملFast Shape from Shading for Phong-Type Surfaces
Shape from Shading (SfS) is one of the oldest problems in image analysis that is modelled by partial differential equations (PDEs). The goal of SfS is to compute from a single 2-D image a reconstruction of the depicted 3-D scene. To this end, the brightness variation in the image and the knowledge of illumination conditions are used. While the quality of models has reached maturity, there is st...
متن کاملAltered transcriptome signature of phenotypically normal skin fibroblasts heterozygous for CDKN2A in familial melanoma: relevance to early intervention
Familial melanoma (FM) is a dominantly heritable cancer that is associated with mutations in the tumor suppressor CDKN2A/p16. In FM, a single inherited "hit" occurs in every somatic cell, enabling interrogation of cultured normal skin fibroblasts (SFs) from FM gene carriers as surrogates for the cell of tumor origin, namely the melanocyte. We compared the gene expression profile of SFs from FM ...
متن کاملComment on "Limits on Dark Matter Using Ancient Mica"
The search for WIMP-recoil tracks in mica using Atomic Force Microscopy [1] promises important improvements on current exclusion limits. For this to be fulfilled, background sources that could mimic the WIMP-recoil signature must be rejected. In the case of naturally occurring α-recoil tracks, the authors rely on the longer expected depth of their etch-pits, since they result from the sum of 8 ...
